ZVISION: ZGI: Subtitles bugged when collecting Lantern Crate from the Dock
Reported by: | Nicholas-Steel | Owned by: | bluegr |

Version: | Keywords: | ||
Cc: | Game: | Zork Grand Inquisitor |
Description
When you send the hook down with 6-pack plastic rings to get the crate containing the Lantern (very early in the game) the subtitles both don't match what is said and display at the wrong time.
I don't know if this is a bug with the DVD version of the game or a bug in ScummVM v2.0. The subtitles that do appear correctly match what happens when playing the CD-ROM version without ZEngine and ScummVM.
I am playing the latest GOG DVD version of the game (fresh install) under Windows 10 x64.

To reiterate what I wrote on the forum, I think that's a bug in the game itself. The movie (pe2em061.avi) apparently has different audio in the DVD version than it does in the CD version, but the subtitles are the same in both versions. I think.

Is it safe to replace the movie file with the one from the CD-ROM version (won't make the game crash)? I have the CD version available and can copy the file off the disc.

I think it should be safe to replace it. Any difference in audio/video codecs should be abstracted away by the AVI decoder. The video from the CD version uses lower resolution, which may be noticeable, but the game engine upscales it to the same size.

I don't think I'd notice the difference in video quality yet, since ScummVM doesn't support the high resolution videos yet (which could explain the subtitle issue, maybe its fixed in the high res video?).

Well, ScummVM doesn't support the .vob movies yet, but some of the .avi movies (I haven't checked which ones) are higher resolution in the DVD version than in the CD version as well, and ScummVM does support that. I'll attach two frames for comparison.

Cool, I can see the difference. The DVD video is a notably higher resolution (or bitrate).

According to MPlayer, the frame from the DVD version is 640x344 pixels, while the one from the CD version is 320x172 pixels. As I said earlier, the game engine scales it to fill the screen if necessary. But even the DVD version has plenty of 320x172 pixel movies, so I don't know which ones differ between the two versions.

There's not much that can be done here, as the game assets (in this case, the video) contained this dialog. Closing as wontfix
