What happens if you try to play the game through scummvm by extracting the ISO and not installing the XP patch? As listed in the data files page http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Datafiles#All_SCI32_.28SCI2.2F3.29_games

copying all data *.* to a folder on the hd and selecting that folder as the game installation with ScummMV 2.0.0 the game starts as it should, saves, loads and exits ok, graphics look a little lowres and there was no way to change that.
I also ran the CD install in windows XP on VirtualBox and that gives an option between VGA 256 and a Hires mode but the game exits on startup due to the VM limitations.

It sounds like the game now runs fine for you.
Can you provide screenshots of the graphics you are seeing in scummvm to dosbox so that we can see if they are different?

Thanks for your report! Installing the game in the ways you’ve described are not valid for ScummVM. Please follow our installation guidelines.
