SHERLOCK: Everything is slightly to fast

Reported by: SF/ignalina Owned by: dreammaster
Priority: normal Component: Engine: Sherlock
Version: Keywords:
Cc: Game: Sherlock Holmes: Case of the Rose Tattoo

Description

In the recent nightlies, all animations have been sped up slightly. Many things that used to look realistic are now comically fast. If this is intentional, there should at least be an option to disable it.

It was changed because of rather slow walking speed. All animations are now affected but it doesn't seem to me so bad. It would be ideal if only Holmes/Watson walking was quicker but I guess it is probably hard to implement. The original game has two speed modes that are switchable by CTRL+S. In my opinion normal mode (before recent speed increase) was too slow and high speed mode is too fast. Maybe adding more user-switchable levels would help. And speed setting should be remembered when closing/opening the game.

Edit: I tried the game in DOSBox and CTRL+S doesn't work there so it is in fact ScummVM feature.

Most of the time I am glad that people don't walk as slowly in computer games as they do in real life, but here I had gotten used to the slow realistic pace. The ideal would definitely be a Sierra-like speed slider, but this should probably be a feature request rather than a bug report.

I though it is a bug when I compared the speed to DOSBox but it could be just false impression, I didn't measure it with stopwatch. Anyway speed slider would be nice.

Well, a full slider is probably out of the question, but certainly making the speedup only optional, with it hooked up to Ctrl+S will be the optimal solution, as it will allow me to do various testings without waiting for Sherlock to slowly walk everywhere, whilst still keeping the previous slow "correct" speed as default.

The Ctrl+S shortcut, by the way, was used in Serrated Scalpel. It just works in Rose Tattoo because both games share the same engine now.

Yes, I think a few speed steps activated by shortcut would be fine if the speed setting is stored, so user won't need to set preferred speed on each ScummVM start.

I've committed in a change to only enable the fast speed when using Ctrl+S shortcut. I don't think this warrants the extra effort of saving the fast speed state between play sessions.
