there seems to be with the <pre class=box> tags. They appear as huge (but, really, huuuuuuge) tables.

Well, the simple fix is to get a browser which complies to web standards and which hence displays the page correctly.
char.php and aary.php are (almost) valid HTML: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://scummvm.sourceforge.net/docs/specs/char.php
The only exception of this are a few & in the navigation links which really should be replaced by &amp; - the only reason we don't do this is yet another stupid bug in IE 6. A pity M$ is not able to fix such trivial and long standing bugs in their products.
Page renders perfect in Gecko based browsers (Mozilla, Phoenix, Camino/Chimera), in Safari (and guess also in Konqueror), Opera and in IE 5/mac.
