This occurs on a Samsung Galaxy Tab E SM-T560 running Android 4.4.4.

It seems to be a really infrequent bug on an old platform.
I will lower its priority.
Having a logcat may still be helpful.

Works here on EGL 1.4 Android META-EGL (Android); GL OpenGL ES 3.0 V@66.0 AU@ (CL@)/Adreno (TM) 305 (Qualcomm)
Seems like a bug/limitation of SM-T560 GPU drivers.
I suppose you have the EU version hence a Spreadtrum SC7730SE SoC with a Mali-400MP4 GPU.
A logcat would be useful to understand what goes wrong.
