Description
This seems to be 100% reproducable. Basically as some points in the game, the game will crash to the ScummVM Console with an error about failing to start some sound. These problems only started with the CVS build of 8.0 currently. I have tested the lastes CVS from August 16 and it still happens. This problem doesn't occur on the stable release 7.1.
Full Throttle (English, 1st release) ScummVM CVS 8.0 (Aug 15 & 16 builds) Windows32 binary
example: I had it crash to the console at the beginning when I grab the bartenders nose ring. I can see the animation of the bartender getting pulled down, but just as Ben would deliver his line "The bar..." the console pops up and kills the game. I have managed to use older save states from release 7.1 and have replicated it at the gas tower upon fleeing with the gas, and also at Todd's trailer if you knock on the door. Just as Todd says "Who's there..." I can see the text for it..but it will crash. I have copied the entire contents of the CD to my FT directly and know the game works since version 7.1 doesn't exhibit any issues with this game at all. But the CVS builds are nothing but trouble. See what you guys can find out as I am shocked I am the only person to encounter this with Full Throttle.

I didn't try your savegame but started from afresh with the latest Win32 build on my WinXP and Full Throttle DOS. No problem whatsoever.

My copy is also the first release DOS version. I can only tell you that is works just fine in the stable release 7.1 but crashes with this loadsound failure message with the CVS builds. I also haven't compressed the monster.sou or anything else. Could it be the fact I run it on an NTFS partition with compression and encyption? Though that folder isn't being encrypted others on the drive are. All I know is that if it was a problem with the files on my particular CD, then it would have issues under 7.1 and it doesn't. I'm not trying to nit pick as I can just stay with 7.1 for now. I am only reporting a problem that I have with the CVS builds and Full Throttle on my PC. I am happy to provide you with any PC specs you want, but I don't know that any of that will help.

Exactly what does the error message say? The closest I can find at a cursory glance is "startSfxSound failed to load sound", which could mean that the sound file (probably called monster.sou or ft.sou or something like that) is damaged.
It used to be just a warning message, not an error, which would explain why 0.7.1 works.

Okay...that latest note did the trick. Yes, that was the exact error I was getting. So I went ahead and cleaned off the CD just to be sure and copied over the monster.sou file again. Now it is working just fine in CVS build 8.0 (Aug 17).
I am now more impressed with the fact that release 7.1 worked 100% with the corrupted monster.sou file. I also was getting all the sound so it really strikes me as odd that even the 7.1 release worked with a corrupted monster.sou file.

As I said, until fairly recently that message used to be a warning, i.e. ScummVM would print the message, ignore the sound and go on as if nothing had happened. Now it's treated as a fatal error instead. The change was made with the comment "Switch to errors, music/sound file is required in many games."
Save before Todd's trailer in Melonweed.
